Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Showrunner Teases How Avengers: Infinity War Could Affect The Show

Unlike every other Marvel TV show out there, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. has always tried to be as related to the movies of the MCU as feasibly possible. Apart from cameos from the likes of Jaime Alexander's Sif, Cobie Smulders' Maria Hill and even Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, the fallout from some of the tentpole films has also played out in the ABC series. Events such as HYDRA being revealed to run S.H.I.E.L.D., Ultron's uprising and the Sokovia Accords have all been explored.

Given this, the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War – the biggest MCU movie to date – will surely have some sort of impact on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as well, right? During a panel featuring the cast and crew at WonderCon, one fan asked the team how the flick might affect the series in the future and co-showrunner Jed Whedon chimed in with an answer that reminded us that the show always takes its cues from the movies.

“If you watched the trailer, a lot of sh*t goes down! These are the kinds of questions we can do everything but answer… The movies blaze a path. When Doctor Strange came out it introduced us to magic which gave us Ghost Rider; when [Guardians of the Galaxy] came out, we were introduced to space. We are waiting for that movie to come out so it can open a new playground for us.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a potential film connection this year. Back when season 5 of S.H.I.E.L.D. kicked off, Whedon revealed that the space setting of this run is a direct result of the selection of cosmic Marvel movies that have arrived over the past couple of years – like Thor: Ragnarok and Guardians Vol. 2.

Of course, to make the most of this opportunity to tie into Infinity War, the show would need a new season. Unfortunately, though, the writing has sadly been on the wall for S.H.I.E.L.D. for a while now, and it’s come to light that this finale is being written with one eye on it being the end of the series. Still, knowing the show, they probably won’t be able to resist dropping in a tease of what season 6 could potentially focus on and going by Whedon’s comments, that would likely involve some kind of Infinity War connection.

Be sure to catch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. every Friday on ABC.
