It’s going on nine months now since the release and subsequent failure of Justice League and still, a steady stream of behind the scenes photos continue to trickle out online.

Case in point: this candid shot of DC’s finest standing beneath something (or someone), as below you’ll find Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Cyborg and Jason Momoa’s Aquaman gawking at what can only be an off-screen enemy – Steppenwolf, in all likelihood, who was later added through special effects.

Reddit presents a different theory altogether, however, and suggests that the Justice League of America is actually about to confront Darkseid in this particular BTS pic, who was named (but never seen) during the film’s theatrical cut. He’s the ultimate big bad of this DC Extended Universe, and the one who sent Steppenwolf to Earth in search of those Mother Boxes.

If nothing else, this is another cool behind the scenes photo to add to the growing collection. Besides, with talk that Warner Bros. is prepared to double down on standalone DC movies over the next two-to-three years – namely Aquaman, Shazam! and Wonder Woman 1984 – chances are we won’t be seeing the Justice League together anytime soon.

That’s not to say that team-up pics have been thrown out entirely; Cathy Yan has been appointed director of Warner’s Birds of Prey movie, while there’s also Gotham City Sirens to look forward to. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn will presumably star in (and produce) both projects, which only goes to show how important she’s become since the launch of Suicide Squad back in 2016.

Up next? James Wan’s standalone Aquaman movie this Christmas, when Arthur Curry will be going up against Bumblebee and the comedy-action movie, Holmes and Watson, which features Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as the titular detectives.
