Aquaman Makes A Big Splash With Epic First Poster

The suitably epic first poster for Aquaman has arrived, and it places Jason Momoa's King of the Seven beneath the waves.

In what is shaping up to be a busy, busy week for Aquaman – and the overall DCEU, it seems – Warner Bros. has premiered a suitably epic poster for James Wan’s maritime adventure.

Arriving on the eve of San Diego Comic-Con, this crowded one-sheet is perhaps the perfect primer for Aquaman‘s maiden trailer, which is expected to hit the interwebs later this week – Saturday, to be precise, when Warner Bros. plans to occupy Hall H and shed light on both Aquaman and its cinematic next of kin, Shazam!

The former is shaping up to be an underwater epic the likes of which we’ve never seen before – part Star Wars, part Avatar, Aquaman‘s visual effects appear to be worth the price of admission alone. But at the heart of James Wan’s DC spinoff is a family epic involving Arthur Curry, Mera (Amber Heard), Orm (Patrick Wilson) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the villainous Black Manta.

It’s a pretty remarkable cast, but today’s poster reveal is all about the King of the Seven himself:

Surrounded by all manner of aquatic life, the above banner is a pointed reminder of Arthur Curry’s superhuman abilities; not only is Aquaman able to swim at supersonic speeds, but he can communicate (and perhaps cooperate?) with other underwater animals. And make no mistake, this is very much a DC origins story, given Warner has cast Kaan Guldur as the 9-year-old Arthur Curry – Otis Dhanji, on the other hand, portrays teenage Arthur.

Warner Bros. and James Wan’s standalone Aquaman movie hits these shores on December 21st. It currently faces a tall order if it’s to seize the box office throne, what with Bumblebee and Fox’s manga epic Alita: Battle Angel all pegged for the same corridor. Who wins? You decide.
