Opening with the scene of Robert De Niro (Dick) grieving over his late wife, today’s sizzle reel kicks into gear when De Niro’s character decides to grab life by the short and curlies to fill his remaining years with booze, cigars and excess. Such a plan involves his soon-to-be-wed bachelor Jason Kelly (Zac Efron), who reluctantly agrees to take his impish old, old man to Daytona.

But Jason’s fiancé Julianne Hough’s is none to pleased that her husband-to-be is swanning off to spring break, and what follows sees Jason and Dick indulge in all manner of shenanigans. It’s by no means original, and even Dirty Grandpa‘s glib dialogue can’t mask its hollow story, though fans of Efron and indeed De Niro’s more unusual acting choices may find something of worth. Aubrey Plaza, Zoey Deutch, Adam Pally and Dermot Mulroney complete the cast.

A road trip movie turned on its head, Efron and De Niro will indulge in the archetypal college lifestyle when Dirty Grandpa opens in theaters on January 22.
