Carrie Fisher Is Star Wars: Episode VII’s First Confirmed Cast Member

Tonight, for one night only, speculation about Star Wars: Episode VII can briefly be briefly put on pause, as we have the first bit of concrete information for the film since J.J. Abrams was announced as director. It looks like there will indeed be at least one cast member from the original trilogy returning, and she may even bring her metal bikini along. Tonight, for one night only, speculation about Star Wars: Episode VII can briefly be put on pause, as we have the first bit of concrete information about the film since J.J. Abrams was announced as director. It looks like there will be at least one cast member from the original trilogy returning, and she may even bring her metal bikini along. That’s right, Carrie Fisher has confirmed that she will indeed be traveling to a galaxy far, far away once again to reprise her role as Princess Leia.

In a recent interview, Fisher was asked if she would be playing Leia for the new film. Her answer? A simple “yes,” which tells us all we needed to know.  She also joked about the Leia of Episode VII being in an intergalactic old folks home, but said in reality, this Leia is probably exactly the same, just a bit slower.

The question fans will likely be furious that the reporter didn’t ask is whether or not Leia has had kids. It’s likely that Fisher wouldn’t have given a direct answer, or that she doesn’t even know, but an answer to that question would help put a tiny bit of plot speculation to rest.

The news that Fisher is in for the next episode of the Star Wars saga means that Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford likely aren’t far off. We know that Hamill and Lucas talked about bringing the original cast back for the next film, and it’s been rumoured that Ford would be joining, so confirmation is potentially just around the corner.

Additionally, the fact that Fisher confirmed the role in an interview that wasn’t in any way Star Wars focused or sanctioned means that it’s very possible the other two are already signed on for the film. Has anyone thought to ask? If someone would like to line me up an interview with Ford, I’d be more than willing to attempt to pry the confirmation out of him.

What do you think of Fisher returning for Star Wars: Episode VII? Are you excited to have her a part of the film, or are you just excited that there’s some concrete Star Wars news in general? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
