Danny Boyle Sticks To The Heist Genre For Smash And Grab

Danny Boyle's Trance is one of my favorite films of 2013. The mind-bending heist thriller was stylish, original, bold and a damn good time. I absolutely loved it and so, I'm happy to tell you that the director is returning to the genre with his next film, Smash and Grab.

Danny Boyle’s Trance is one of my favorite films of 2013. The mind-bending heist thriller was stylish, original, bold and a damn good time. I absolutely loved it and so, I’m happy to tell you that the director is returning to the genre with his next film, Smash and Grab.

According to Variety, Boyle will once again work with Pathe and Fox Searchlight as he plans to adapt the documentary Smash and Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers, which was released a few months ago. It tells the true story of the world’s best diamond thieves, who call themselves the Pink Panthers.

No writer has been attached just yet for Smash and Grab and casting hasn’t begun, so it’s still early days for this project. Hopefully things move along quickly though because it really does sound like another exciting film for Boyle to get his hands on. The documentary that the film is based on looks like it presents a truly thrilling and gripping story and I’m curious to see how Boyle will choose to adapt it.

I’m always a sucker for a good heist movie, and I am a huge fan of Boyle’s work (Trainspotting is one of my all time favorites), so this project really seems like it will be right up my alley. Plus, it’s based on a true story, and it’s a story that I don’t think many people know of. Have you heard of the Pink Panthers? I certainly haven’t.

Though it is another heist film, Smash and Grab will likely be less trippy and perplexing than Trance was, so it will definitely be a different kind of heist flick for the director. Still, if he could stick to the elements that made Trance such an enjoyable entry into the genre, then he could have another success on his hands with this one.

Check out the trailer for the original documentary below and let us know what you think of Danny Boyle adapting Smash and Grab.
