With Mud, Shotgun Stories and Take Shelter under his belt, Jeff Nichols is quickly becoming one of the most promising and exciting filmmakers in Hollywood. His next effort, Midnight Special, isn’t set to arrive until November 25th, 2015, but already anticipation is high. Details on the sci-fi thriller have been scarce, but today we have the first plot synopsis, and you can check it out for yourself below.

Midnight Special is a supernatural sci-fi thriller from acclaimed writer/director Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter). It stars Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire, Man of Steel) as Roy, a father desperate to protect his uniquely gifted, eight-year-old son Alton, played by newcomer Jaeden Lieberher.

Joined by Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby, Animal Kingdom) and Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man, Melancholia), this group must race to get Alton to a secret location all while being hunted by an extreme religious sect led by Sam Shepard (Mud, August: Osage County) and a government task force headed up by Adam Driver (Girls). It is a full-on chase, the outcome of which could bring about a world-changing event.

The director has also revealed that he’s hoping to give the film a tone similar to genre movies and have it take place almost entirely at night, which kind of makes sense given the title.

While we’re still a long ways away from seeing any images or footage from Midnight Special, it certainly sounds like Nichols has something very intriguing up his sleeve. And with the cast that he’s assembled, there’s no reason to doubt that the director’s fourth outing behind the camera will be any less electrifying than his last three.

We’ll keep you posted when we hear more on Midnight Special, but for now, tell us, what do you think Jeff Nichols has in store for us with his next feature film? Sound off below!
