Exclusive Video Interview: Ruth Negga Talks Loving

The profoundly moving Loving tells the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving, who, in 1958, were sentenced to prison and eventually exiled for getting married in Virginia, a state that prohibited interracial marriages.

Portrayed so achingly good in the film by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, the Loving’s plight to stay married and live and raise their family where they felt most at home inspired them to take their fight all the way to Supreme Court. The decision handed down by the justices ruled that Lovings were entitled to be married, thus changing the US Constitution forever.

Writer/director Jeff Nichols, whose stellar work includes Midnight Special, Mud and Take Shelter, goes beyond just the telling of the Loving’s case, as the film dives deep into these two people’s hearts and minds, showing how their unassuming and pure love for one another transcended just any ordinary love story.

At the recent press day for Loving, which was held in Los Angeles, we sat down with Negga to talk about the relevancy of this story today, working with Nichols, her role on Preacher and more.

Hear what she had to say in the video above and be sure to catch Loving when it hits theatres this Friday!
