Gerard Butler Says How To Train Your Dragon 3 Will Be The Best One Yet

Given how successful the franchise has been up to this point, it's a bit surprising that it's taken so damn long for How To Train Your Dragon 3 to get off the ground. Granted, animated films often do have long productions, but still, the last film flew into theatres in 2014 and the threequel isn't set to arrive until 2019. That's a five year gap, which is a long time for any series - animated or not.

Given how successful the franchise has been up to this point, it’s a bit surprising that it’s taken so damn long for How To Train Your Dragon 3 to get off the ground. Granted, animated films often do have long productions, but still, the last movie flew into theatres in 2014 and the threequel isn’t set to arrive until 2019. That’s a five year gap, which is a long time for any series – animated or not.

Still, interest in the franchise remains high, and fans are eager for any and all tidbits they can get their hands on as the long wait continues. Thankfully, star Gerard Butler is happy to speak about the project and in a recent interview with Screen Rant to promote his new effort, Den of Thieves, promised that the upcoming film might just be the best one of them all.

So I have How to Train Your Dragon, which I just did my bit on and it’s so beautiful I think it might be the best of the lot.

That’s certainly encouraging to hear, and follows along nicely from what Butler’s co-star, Jay Baruchel, said back in March, when he teased the excellent story that awaits us:

This is what I’ll say, and for whatever it’s worth I do swear that this is not just promo nonsense. It’s by far, the strongest of the stories (of the 3). It’s the movie that the series requires and deserves and it’s the rightful third chapter or third act, I should say. I don’t think anybody will be disappointed.

How to Train Your Dragon 3 is set to fly into theatres on March 1st, 2019, after being delayed numerous times, and will supposedly close out the franchise. Fans needn’t worry, however, as director Dean DeBlois has already teased that there could be some spinoffs. For the time being, though, it sounds like there’s a lot to look forward to with this third chapter and if Butler is to be believed, it’s definitely going to conclude the trilogy on a high note.
