Jack Reacher Likely Won’t Be A Franchise

%name Jack Reacher Likely Wont Be A Franchise

Despite earning Paramount $700 million worldwide with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, it looks like Tom Cruise won’t be getting to go ahead from the studio to turn his newest action film, Jack Reacher, into a franchise. Nothing is official just yet but if the film can’t do big business at the box office overseas, then it looks like plans for the sequel may be abandoned.

Though the film received mediocre reviews from critics, many still hoped that the studio would give Cruise another chance, especially given the fact that author Lee Child has written over 15 novels about the character. In fact, the original plan when developing the film was to turn it into a franchise, using Child’s novels as the basis for each new film. Unfortunately though, it looks like the train may be stopping after just one stop.

Made on a $60 million budget, the film’s $150 million-plus worldwide haul isn’t anything to scoff at, but apparently Paramount is looking for $250 million before it will entertain the idea of a sequel. Now, there still is hope for all you Reacher fans out there. The film has yet to be released in markets like Japan, China and more. If it makes a splash overseas, it could hit that 250 mark. It will be tough, but not impossible.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing a Jack Reacher sequel. The first film wasn’t great but it did have its moments. I was also impressed with what Cruise was able to do with the character. If the proposed sequel can learn from the mistakes of the first film and make some improvements, this whole franchise idea could work out. There’s certainly more than enough source material to draw from.

What do you think? Do you want to see a sequel to Jack Reacher? Did you enjoy the film? Which book do you want to see used for the sequel?

Sell the property to Lionsgate and let them make a sequel with Tyler Perry. Not.

Reboot the whole thing with Reacher’s Origin from a drifter to a Not-so good Military Police Cadet.

Loved it, Would love to see another!

I haven’t seen the movie, nor will I. As a fan of the Reacher series, I can’t believe Tom Cruise was cast in the lead role. He’s about half the size Jack Reacher is supposed to be and that just ain’t right.

Very good movie way better than I was lead to believe. I most certainly would see a second one! Cruise did fantastic job with the character. It held my interest for the full two hours and fifteen minutes and kept me guessing at the out come. Duvall was minimal used but very efficiently. Pike was always easy on the eyes but commanded her screen time well. Go see it on the big screen!

Fun movie–I hope they do a sequel!

OK, I’ve read all the books and I saw the movie. Jack Reacher is this generation’s Dirty Harry, unfortunately Tom Cruise is not Clint Eastwood. However, he wasn’t bad in the lead role and I would like to see this franchise continue. The movie was actually pretty good and I would like to see more. The character is fantastic with an incredible upside, especially in the books where Reacher is still active duty military. Don’t give up yet.

Are you kidding me…their first mistake was casting Cruise. Just read one book and you would never imagine TOM CRUISE playing Jack Reacher in a million years. Oh, let’s see…Channing Tatum (Magic Mike), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Daniel Craig (James Bond), Karl Urban (Dredd), Alexander Skarsgard (Battleship)…hell…I’d even give Ben Affleck or The Rock a shot at it before Cruise. Just like the producers of the new Superman: Man of Steel went out and found the perfect casting for the new Superman, I think the producers/director/studio missed the boat here by falling victim to the “Who can we get that can OPEN this movie” mentality and not finding the right actor to fill those size 15 shoes. Unfortunately for us fans we have no choice but to take what we’re given because we’re never getting a sequel.

AMEN. It was a colossal act of hubris for TC to envision and cast himself as Reacher, and Paramount and Cruise should be relieved the film did as well as it did – this film should have been released surrounded by the excited buzz of millions of series fans, not entire web pages expressing disgust. But sure, reboot the series – just get a Reacher we can believe in.

I have enjoyed Cruise in some of his movies. This is NOT one of them. His ego wrote checks his on-screen presence couldn’t cash…not in a million years. He shoulda left this series of novels alone and let Lee Child cast the damn movie himself.
Here’s a thought: Ray Stephenson. 6’5″ tall, 250 lbs. and acting chops. Put him on screen with Cruise and the Dwarf would disappear. Check him out on imdb.com if you doubt me.
Lee Child made a MONUMENTAL mistake by allowing his rights to be bought by Cruise. He has effectively lost hundreds of millions of dollars in royalties with a horribly miscast “Reacher”.

An average Reacher is better than no Reacher at all.

Ive waited for years for these novels to be made into films, imaging what great actor could play the lead role. Then they cast a midget – sorry, I hope this flops and never resurfaces again – not that Ive watched it. I refuse to as it would ruin my enjoyment of future books if I had to picture Tom Cruise in my head

It was a great fllm. Better than i thought it would be. I would like to see Tom make a sequel. I think he should make 61 Hours. Now that would be a great sequel.

Books are amazing, movie was good,Cruise’s Reacher pretty similiar, besides height to book Reacher so I’m game for another. Critics may not get it without the read…who cares….the books are about an isatiable desire to wrong rights and beat the hell out of bullies which resonates with anyone with a pulse. Jack Reacher is the perfect anti-hero to look up to in these times of uncertainties. Just wish they would include a scene where he walks into the Well Fargo HQ and does his thing…..epic redemption.
