In news that makes perfect sense, Focus Features and Blumhouse Productions have selected Leigh Whannell to direct Insidious: Chapter 3. While the first two instalments were helmed by James Wan, the director has since announced his intentions to move away from the horror genre and will not be involved in the third outing.

Whannell, of course, is no stranger to horror, having written and appeared in both of the previous Insidious films as well penning the scripts for several of the Saw movies. Insidious: Chapter 3 will mark his first time behind the camera, but given how involved he’s been in both the franchise and the genre up to this point, I don’t imagine that it will present too much of a challenge for him. Honestly, if there is anyone that could take over for Wan and still deliver an equally impressive third entry for the franchise, it’s Leigh Whannell.

As for casting, Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne and not expected to return. Whannell will be back in front of the camera reprising his role, along with Angus Sampson and Lin Shaye, but plot details haven’t been revealed just yet and at this point, we’re not sure which direction the film will head in. As always though, we’ll keep you posted when we hear more.
