Directing from a screenplay pitched by Eric Heisserer, Lights Out is the natural evolution of Sandberg’s own short film, which he wrote, directed and produced. In its leap to the big screen, the filmmaker has cast the likes of Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Alexander DiPersia, Billy Burke and Maria Bello for his horror feature.

Peppered with review quotes, today’s all-new snippet is a truly haunting experience and if you weren’t already planning to sleep with the lights firmly switched on tonight, the trailer above will ensure that you keep darkness at a safe distance.

From producer James Wan (The Conjuring) comes a tale of an unknown terror that lurks in the dark. When Rebecca left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn’t real when the lights went out…and now her little brother, Martin, is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety. A frightening entity with a mysterious attachment to their mother, Sophie, has reemerged. But this time, as Rebecca gets closer to unlocking the truth, there is no denying that all their lives are in danger…once the lights go out.

Lights Out will open opposite Star Trek Beyond on July 22, meaning you can offset the dizzying spectacle of Justin Lin’s blockbuster with some good old-fashioned – and ruddy terrifying – horror.
