Spider-Man Might Still Be Joining The Marvel Cinematic Universe

After last night's scoop surrounding the Sony Hack, news spread that at one point Marvel Studios were in serious talks with Sony bosses to include Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. While both properties, Spidey and Cap, originate from the pages of Marvel's comics, their big-screen rights are split across two studios. Spider-Man belongs to Sony, and Cap belongs to Marvel. This means sadly, that despite Spider-Man's appearance in the Civil War comic book storyline, legally he cannot appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s important to note that this is not the cut and dry news we reported yesterday, but a far more complex deal. However, despite these new details emerging, isn’t the end result still the same? No Spider-Man in the MCU?

Well, it seems that Sony Pictures’ parent company, Sony, are having the last word on the issue. Apparently, the bosses are unhappy with the performance of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, citing quality as an issue. The folks over at Latino Review report the following:

What I’m hearing from my little birds is that Sony, the parent company, views Sony Pictures’s handling of the Spider-Man property as disappointing. Sony wants to be all about “quality” films (actual one-word quote, not air quotes), and the Amazing Spider-Man movies have not been that, nor have the rumors of future films in the franchise. Sony Japan thinks the Marvel deal for Spider-Man is still on the table and they want to renegotiate as a return to quality, the 60/40 split is can be negotiated and Sony Entertainment’s October hard-line stance of wanting creative control is now mostly moot in the eyes of the higher-ups.

So, with the bigwigs keen for Marvel to harness the creative control over the proposed Spider-Man trilogy, the ideal outcome here would be for the deal to enter re-negotiations. With Sony Pictures head Amy Pascal also keen for the crossover to happen, it makes sense for the studio to at least consider joining forces with Marvel. Sure, the 60/40 would see Marvel coughing up the heftier portion of financing, but fans would definitely flock to see this crossover. If Kevin Feige and co. can work their magic on revitalizing the dying Spider-Man cinematic brand, Sony stands to reap (some of) the benefits.

Tell us, what do you think? Should the two worlds stay separate on the big screen? Or would you love to see Spider-Man alongside Cap and Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War? Let us know in the comments!
