Taika Waititi Promises Laughter And Spectacle In Thor: Ragnarok

This week, we finally got a first look at Thor: Ragnarok thanks to behind the scenes photos and concept art, but there's still an awful lot we don't know about the movie. The basic premise of a de-powered God of Thunder being sent by Hela to a gladiatorial arena to take on The Hulk is already out there, but what else director Taika Waititi will be bringing to the table is unclear.

This week, we finally got our first look at Thor: Ragnarok thanks to behind the scenes photos and concept art, but there’s still an awful lot we don’t know about the movie. The basic premise of a de-powered God of Thunder being sent by Hela to a gladiatorial arena to take on the Hulk is already out there, but what else director Taika Waititi will be bringing to the table is unclear.

After all, the filmmaker has never tackled a project this big, and while his back catalogue is excellent, his quirky comedies are worlds away from the epic action that fans expect from the upcoming threequel. We’ve still got at least a few more months to go before we get the first bit of footage from Ragnarok, but talking in a Phase 3 featurette on the Digital HD release of Doctor Strange, Waititi shed some light on what’s to come in Thor: Ragnarok and what he’s hoping to deliver with the Phase 3 release.

“I want to take people on an adventure that keeps people laughing along the way, but also has the spectacle. It’s going to have some of the wildest, craziest, most amazing action you’ve ever seen in the MCU.”

Something the Marvel movies have always done right is finding the right mix of humour and action, so the fact that Waititi looks set to do the same should come as a relief to those worrying that Thor: Ragnarok could end up being a full-on comedy, pushing aside the epic nature of the God of Thunder’s adventures as a result.

Speculation points to the first trailer for Thor: Ragnarok arriving alongside Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so it shouldn’t be too much longer now before we can lay eyes on what Waititi’s come up with here, but so far, it certainly sounds like the threequel will deliver and should, at the very least, be a big step up from The Dark World.
