It seems like every other day, The Weeknd is breaking some kind of new record. This past August, the singer set two Guinness World Records: he had the most streamed album on Spotify in one year with Beauty Behind The Madness, and he also spent the most consecutive weeks in the top ten of Billboard’s Hot 100 for a male solo artist. He’s keeping up his Spotify success again now with the help of his new album, Starboy, and it’s given him the honor of becoming the most streamed artist in a single day.
Starboy released this past weekend on November 25th, and even though The Weeknd gets streamed pretty frequently in the first place, the new album definitely helped. Given the fact that so few songs of the album’s 18 were premiered ahead of time, fans and the public alike naturally jumped on the service to see what else the record had in store.
Spotify commented on the achievement in a recent press release, stating that they were “proud” to have worked with the artist on “a phenomenal album.” While exact streaming figures weren’t released, the previous record was held by Justin Bieber, who had been streamed 36 million times on November 13th of last year.
This is surely just one of the many records that The Weeknd will break in the coming months, as Starboy is expected to debut next week at number one on the charts with sales around 340,000 to 350,000, and if those figures hold steady, it’d be good enough for the third-highest selling debut of the year.
