After being marked as the frontrunner for the role in conjunction with Krysten Ritter’s casting as Jessica Jones, it’s now been made official: Mike Colter is Marvel’s Luke Cage.

The Halo: Nightfall and The Good Wife alum will actually make his debut in the upcoming Jessica Jones Netflix series before getting his own Luke Cage spinoff. The shows are part of the five-series deal Marvel struck with Netflix, which also includes Daredevil (which will arrive first), Iron Fist and a crossover miniseries titled The Defenders.

The 13-episode Jessica Jones series is being spearheaded by Dexter and Twilight alum Melissa Rosenberg, who had the following to say about Colter’s casting:

“Mike embodies the strength, edge and depth of Luke Cage. We’re excited to have him bring this iconic Marvel character to life.”

In the casting announcement, Marvel dropped a few interesting Jessica Jones tidbits, the first of which is the fact that they’re actually calling the series A.K.A. Jessica Jones. They also provided a bit of a synopsis, which gives us a hint of how Luke Cage and the titular superheroine – who have long been crime-fighting partners and lovers in the comics – meet:

During the course of an investigation in New York City, private investigator Jessica Jones encounters the enigmatic Luke Cage – a man whose past has secrets that will dramatically alter Jessica in ways she could never have imagined.
