The star of Tika Sumpter is most assuredly in the ascendency, with high profile roles in Southside With You (which she also produced), and the TV show The Have And The Have Nots currently topping her resume. These are about to be superseded by The 313, however – a new drama from CBS, in which Sumpter will star, as well as co-executive produce.
The series is created by writer Tracy McMillan (Mad Men), and takes its title from the area code for Detroit. The show will chronicle the unseating of that city’s government administration through the exposure of a far-reaching sex scandal. This unexpected turn of events leads directly to the 29 year old City Council President (Tika Sumpter) becoming Mayor Of Detroit by default. As she takes office, she’s faced with the incredible pressure that her new job brings, as well as the politics and prejudices it draws out in those around her.
The 313 comes to CBS by way of a first-look deal with producer Michael London, and there have been no other casting announcements yet made. This is an incredibly solid start for this production, however, and anticipation is sure to continue building as additional names are added to the cast.
