Next to the Cannes Film Festival, the Venice Film Festival is probably the world’s most prestigious film fest. With Cannes already wrapped up and out of the way, we’re now looking ahead towards Venice and the wonderful films it will bring.
Today, THR spoke to the new director of the festival who stated that there are some very high-profile films that are likely to appear.
Terrence Malick, Brian De Palma and Paul Thomas Anderson are all likely to bring their films to the festival this year. De Palma is of course currently filming Passion with Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace, which could be finished in time and P.T. Anderson is hoping to bring the highly anticipated The Master. Last but not least, Malick could be bringing his love story To The Wonder or his documentary A Voyage In Time.
Aside from those three, there’s a couple other high profile films that we think could show up. Derek Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond The Pines with Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper was rumoured to be in contention to make a premiere at Cannes but seeing as that didn’t happen, Venice seems likely.
James Franco premiered his Sal Mineo biopic at the festival last year so his adaptation of Cormac McCarthy‘s Child Of God could very well make the cut as well.
Then there’s Olivier Assayas‘ Someting In The Air and Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina, both of which have been rumored to show up. Lastly, Sofia Coppola may show up with The Bling Ring. She won best picture award at the festival in 2010 with her last film Somewhere and with The Bling Ring in post-production now it may just slip through in time.
This year will also feature fewer films at the festival with less than 50 expected to be chosen to be part of the festival in its three categories; In Competition, Horizons and Out Of Competition.
The 2012 Venice Film Festival will take place this year from August 29th to September 8.
