While it seems like Ezra Miller could potentially have a future as the Flash in James Gunn’s DCU, many fans would rather see another version of the hero.
If a hero lasts long enough in comics it’s quite likely that we as readers will see multiple people don the costume and continue the story. Peter Parker was replaced as Spider-Man by Miles Morales, Ant-Man was Hank Pym before Scott Lang took the name, and we’ve lost count of how many Robins there have been. After all, even superheroes have to retire or die eventually.
Usually, the original character is the one most people tend to like the most. Sometimes you just can’t beat the original, and sometimes you can, as is the case with the Scarlet Speedster. The original Flash may have faded completely into obscurity, but fans debated their favorite iteration of the character. For a long time Barry Allen has been the poster boy for speedsters, despite being the second person to don the red suit and lightning bolt.Â
Most adaptations of have chosen to focus on Barry due to his popularity. In the most recent films he’s been played by Ezra Miller, who has been seeking help since their controversial behaviour last year. However, it turns out that Barry might not be the favorite anymore. The debate between fans on Reddit centered around Barry and his replacement, Wally West.
Surprisingly, many fans cast their vote in favor of Wally, proclaiming him to be a better character. He also has a lot of great storylines compared to Barry who’s most notable comic run is Flashpoint, the fans even backed up their argument by naming some of his best.
Barry sounds like he’s stealing a lot of the credit from Wally if we’re being honest. And if Warner Bros. decides to adapt Wally West storylines, it’s unlikely the studio would cast Miller, as they are already playing Barry, and it just wouldn’t make sense.
Some did cast their votes in favor of the real OG Flash, that being Jay Garrick. But it seems like he’s destined to always be the third best version of the character.
There were some who jumped in to defend Barry Allen so all hope is not lost for Miller to return to the DCU as their iconic character.
As awesome as it would be to see Wally West in the DCU, there doesn’t seem to be any concrete plans just yet, aside from the upcoming The Flash, which will reset the timeline. Whether Gunn will continue with Miller as Barry or reset with a new character and actor is likely dependent on how the movie performs in theaters this year.
