Proving yet again that it really is an audiovisual buffet, the latest original feature to explode as an overnight Netflix sensation is a German rom-com with a culture clash twist, seeing as subscribers have found the lure of Faraway to be irresistible after it premiered a mere 24 hours ago.
Per FlixPatrol, director Vanessa Jopp’s run-of-the-mill cross-continental caper has instantaneously seized a Top 10 position in 59 countries, which has seen it debut as the platform’s second most-watched movie, with Christopher Landon’s supernatural caper We Have a Ghost maintaining its two-week stranglehold on the number one spot.
The story finds an overworked and undervalued woman growing tired of being shunned by her husband, daughter, and father, but the final straw arrives when her recently-deceased mother is outfitted in a man’s suit for her funeral, and not the favorite dress that had been picked out beforehand. As you do, that causes protagonist Zeynep Altin to flee the bustling city of Munich.
Heading off to Croatia and the secret remote cottage her mother had sneakily purchased years beforehand, another spanner is thrown in the works when the former owner is revealed to be living on the same plot of land. He’s also the charming, rugged, and handsome type, so you can probably figure out the rest of the plot beats from there without too much effort.
Nonetheless, the frivolous Faraway hasn’t taken long to stamp its authority on Netflix’s rankings, and it does at least make for a change of pace that it isn’t a mystery thriller or something focusing on a serial killer for a change.
