On the interview circuit for People Like Us, resident Cap. Kirk in the J.J. Abrams Star Trek series, Chris Pine, had a few choice words to say about the upcoming sequel to the 2009 film, tentatively titled Star Trek 2. Pine had only cryptic but promising things to say about the film’s villain, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, but he was a little bit more blatant on other topics.

Pine discussed comparisons of the new film to the first one in an interview with Ain’t It Cool, where he says that the plot for Star Trek 2 is much better than that of Star Trek.

Here’s what he had to say:

[Star Trek 2] is relentless, and for the visually inclined people who want to see major sequences, there are a couple specifically that I think… I’m not a huge 3-D fan, but I think will be incredible. But what I’m more excited about and what I think they did so well is that really the story is that much better, and the journey that these guys go on is that much more, and what they always talked about is that even though they’re a crew from what we know about the original team, the fun of getting there is following that journey to where they become that tight-knit crew.

Much better story, eh? That’s exciting if accurate, considering just how impressed most Trekkies and new fans were with the stellar screenplay of the 2009 reboot. As for his thoughts on Cumberbatch, here’s an excerpt from an interview Pine did with MTV:

As you know from Benedict, just watching him, vocally, he’s fascinating. He’s got this deep resonate voice. He has a fascinating face. He’s a lovely guy and just super smart. You want to see something firing in his brain, so he’s not just a blood-dripping-from-the-fangs bad guy. Benedict brings those kinds of smarts.

Benedict Cumberbatch, for those yet uninitiated with the Brit, is famous for his role in the television series Sherlock, as well as a myriad of other films, including the recent Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Sadly for fans, the details of his role in Star Trek 2 are mostly being kept secret. That being said, despite who he’ll be playing, the actor will surely hit the role out of the park.
