‘Suicide Squad’ director accepts apology after responding to a troll with virtual hugs

It might rank as the lowest-rated installment in the entire DCU on Rotten Tomatoes, but the fact the Ayer Cut campaign is still rumbling on in the background as we approach the film’s seven-year anniversary tells you all you need to know about how certain sections of the fandom feel about Suicide Squad.

In an alternate reality, director David Ayer would have been allowed to release his unfettered original vision of the antihero ensemble adventure, which may have saved him the ignominy of either responding to or completely ignoring the trolls who’ve made a habit of setting up shop on his Twitter timeline ever since.

Having long since grown accustomed to the vitriol, though, Ayer has instead opted to try and kill them with kindness. Upon being criticized for Suicide Squad yet again, the filmmaker decided to pose a thoughtful response – complete with a virtual hug.

Realizing the error of their ways in a development that was something akin to a hateful social media spin on a A Christmas Carol, the naysayer then offered an apology for their heated comments, which was then accepted in kind by the End of Watch architect.

Given that the Ayer Cut continues to trend on a regular basis – and will no doubt do so again the closer we get to Zack Snyder’s Full Circle event – it’s heartwarming to a degree to see Ayer cajoling his most vociferous opponents into seeing the light. Not that he’ll do it every time, but it’s definitely an approach worth continuing.
