It’s going to be very interesting to see how DCU fans react to having anywhere up to three versions of the Joker running around at any given time, because you’d be willing to bet your house on James Gunn’s The Brave and the Bold boasting at least an Easter Egg hinting towards the Clown Prince of Crime’s involvement.
Joaquin Phoenix is currently shooting the sequel to his billion-dollar and Oscar-winning first outing as Arthur Fleck, while Barry Keoghan’s gnarly Jester of Genocide is expected to have a much larger role in Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II. While there are no guarantees the mainline DCU’s version of Batman will introduce the Dark Knight’s arch-nemesis right off the bat, it’s going to happen eventually.
Casting suggestions have been getting thrown around left, right, and center ever since the project was first announced, but one of the worst suggestions has come via Reddit, with support being gauged for Jim Carrey. While it’s a strong idea in practice given his underrated dramatic chops and exceedingly malleable face, there are two notable caveats.
One is that the rubber-faced funnyman is currently 61 years old, and if Dave Bautista has aged out of consideration for Bane, then someone a decade his senior won’t be given one of the superhero saga’s biggest gigs. Secondly, Carrey claimed that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 would be the final movie of his career, and while retirement is hardly an ironclad stipulation in Hollywood, the chances of him signing a multi-picture contract as the Joker are less than zero.
