Critics of James Gunn were quick to point out following his appointment as co-CEO of DC Studios that he once claimed on Twitter he had no interest in taking on an executive role similar to that of either Walter Hamada or Kevin Feige, but people can in fact change their minds if they see fit.
However, based on the filmmaker’s concerns over Avengers: Endgame that were raised in a recent interview, we could have been offered an insight into what convinced him to disregard his previous comments and take the top job. In an eye-opening revelation, Gunn admitted that he was a little bummed out by Thor teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy by the time the credits rolled on the Infinity Saga’s final chapter.
In fact, his exact words were “what the f*ck am I gonna do?”, to add some context. Thankfully, he was lent an assist by Taika Waititi in the opening act of Love and Thunder, which removed that obstacle from his path. That being said, Gunn offered that if that even if that hadn’t happened, he never had any intentions of incorporating Chris Hemsworth’s Odinson into the upcoming Vol. 3.
Now that he’s running the show alongside Peter Safran, it’s a canonical concern that he won’t have to be dealing with for quite some time. Everyone knows that every major MCU decision is filtered through Kevin Feige at one stage or another, but that’s Gunn’s gig at DC Studios now. No longer will he be put in a pickle by onscreen developments outwith his control, which very nearly painted him into a corner from a narrative standpoint when he sat down and began to hammer out the screenplay for the Guardians’ last stand.
