Rob Lowe’s latest eccentric dad comedy series climbs the Netflix charts

Rob Lowe and his real-world son climbed the top ten in the face of stiff competition.

Rob Lowe’s working relationship with Netflix has been a busy one in the first quarter of 2023. Having released a pet-centric feature film on the platform a little over two months ago, Lowe has now launched a television series which has managed to debut in the global Netflix Top 10 list for the week.

Despite facing some stiff competition from other heavy-hitting Netflix debuts this week, such as Unseen and Emergency: NYC, Lowe’s latest series, Unstable, debuted as the number nine most-watched show on the streaming platform, with close to 11.5 hours viewed. Ahead of it stood the astonishingly ever-popular Wednesday, which saw a little over 12 million views, in its 18th week in the charts.

Despite a solid debut, the numbers Unstable was able to pull couldn’t hold a candle to what’s happening in the top three, with The Night Agent raking in a huge 216 million hours viewed, followed by Love is Blind: Season 4 and Shadow and Bone: Season 2 rounding out the top three.

Unstable is born from the mind of Rob Lowe himself and that of his son John Owen Lowe, who stars in the series alongside his father. Lowe plays Ellis Dragon, who brings his son into his wildly successful biotech business while grappling with the loss of his wife. It’s gotten itself a respectable 71% critic score over on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences rating it at 83%.

In terms of overall reception, then, it is leaps and bounds above Dog Gone, a film starring Lowe which debuted on Netflix in late January that also managed to eke its way into the top ten at the time.
