‘I am lucky enough to have a personal connection’: Hailee Steinfeld opens up about her emotions surrounding Jeremy Renner’s snow plow incident

The dynamic duo from 'Hawkeye' have a lot of love for each other.

It’s been a few months since Avengers star Jeremy Renner had his snow plow accident, and while it was dicey there for a bit, he’s made huge steps in his recovery. Hailee Steinfeld, who played Kate Bishop in the Renner-led Hawkeye, recently revealed how she felt during Renner’s recovery.

Renner was airlifted to a medical center on New Year’s Day after he was accidentally run over by a snow plower. He suffered more than 30 broken bones, but he kept up his spirits, at least on social media.

“These 30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens. Love and blessings to you all,” he said in an Instagram post in January.

One of those close relationships Renner shares is with Steinfeld. In a recent interview with People, she shared that she was really close with Renner and also Jeff Bridges, and that watching close friends like that struggle affected her deeply.

“I haven’t really talked about it, but it is a weird thing because I would be so moved by what has happened to them in any other case, and here I am lucky enough to have a personal connection,” she said. “I’m just so beyond grateful that they’re both here.”

On the eve of his accident, Steinfeld reacted to a Renner post where he said “Thank you all for your kind words. Im too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.”

“Come on partner!!! Thank God you’re healing. We are sending you love and prayers for a speedy recovery,” she said.

Renner, for his part, said he enjoyed mentoring Steinfeld on the set of Hawkeye.

“That was always my role. Outside of acting in the thing, I was protecting her and giving her the CliffsNotes on how it goes with this kind of filmmaking: Green screen, superhero life, all that stuff. I just wanted to protect her, because there’s a lot of physical stuff. She’s a wonderful actress, a wonderful human, and I can’t wait to see all the cool stuff that she’s able to do.”

There’s no word yet on whether the duo will reunite for a second season of Hawkeye. Earlier this year, Marvel said it was going to slow down the pace of its shows, perhaps realizing that quality trumps quantity. Studio president Kevin Feige told EW that it’s “harder to hit the zeitgeist when there’s so much product out there.”

“So, people will see that as we get further into Phase 5 and 6. The pace at which we’re putting out the Disney Plus shows will change so they can each get a chance to shine.”

Maybe that means we’ll still get Hawkeye season 2. We’ll keep you posted.
