An actor who turned down Batman rumored to be heading for Gotham in a different role

Hopefully this decision won't come down to the flip of a coin.

While filming for The Batman – Part II has apparently been delayed, casting whispers are starting to surface for the new characters coming to Gotham in the sequel to Matt Reeves’ 2022 hit.

Josh Hartnett is one of the names floating around as a possible contender to take on the iconic villain Harvey Dent, who could possibly be joining the new franchise in its second outing, while Joel Edgerton is also reportedly in the running.

The rumors come from The Hot Mic podcast – namely host John Rocha – who says the information was relayed by a source who he “vetted.” Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, who is usually the one with the exclusives on the show, seems to think it’s too early for casting decisions, saying those should start rolling around in the fall.

As is usually the case with movies in the superhero genre, the people who play the iconic comic book figures are almost as important as the characters themselves. As a result, rumors are rampant in the months leading up to production.

This is not the first time Hartnett has been at the center of these conversations, considering he was almost cast as Batman himself for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Although he turned it down at the time for fear of being typecast, could 2025 be the year the actor finally heads to Gotham?

According to Sneider, The Batman – Part II will go into pre-production at the end of the year. Shooting was initially scheduled to kick off in November 2023, but new reports indicate it might have been delayed to March 2024, possibly due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike.

Still, the release date shouldn’t be affected, and Robert Pattinson should be back on our screens as the Caped Crusader on October 3, 2025.
