Taylor Lautner doesn’t seem to harbor any resentment over the criticisms of his post-Twilight career failing to take off to the same extent as that of co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, but not starring in utter dreck like Abduction may have helped his cause.
It was a smart enough move on paper to try and segue out of being pigeonholed as a performer by moving straight into action thriller territory, but the results couldn’t have turned out much worse. While the fast-paced mystery may have been a decent success at the box office after earning $82 million, Lautner’s Razzie nomination for Worst Actor and a five percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes tells the real story.
To say Abduction should have turned out a great deal better than it did goes without saying, especially when you consider two-time Academy Award-nominated filmmaker John Singleton was at the helm, with the supporting cast packed to the rafter with such esteemed names as Lilly Collins, Alfred Molina, Maria Bello, Dermot Mulroney, Jason Isaacs, Michael Nyqvist, and Sigourney Weaver.
Of course, streaming subscribers care not a jot for what the critics think, but that doesn’t make it any less confounding that Abduction has suddenly decided that 12 years after being savaged by anyone unfortunate enough to see it the first time around is the ideal time to become one of the biggest hits on the most recognizable platform of them all.
Either way, FlixPatrol naming the diabolical dud as the sixth top-viewed movie on the entire content library is a fact, even though it comes recommended by almost nobody.
