The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a roaring success commercially, pulling in $1.3 billion and becoming the highest-grossing release of 2023 so far.
Arguably even more successful than the film was star Jack Black‘s song “Peaches,” a highlight that instantly went viral online. Last night, lucky fans got to hear the song like never before, performed live at The Game Awards‘ 10-year anniversary concert.
The one-night-only concert celebrated the 10-year anniversary of The Game Awards with the fantastical musical talent that goes into gaming. The event featured The Games Award Orchestra conducted by Grammy-winning and BAFTA-and Emmy-nominated Lorne Balfe, the composer behind the music featured across a wide variety of games including Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty, as well as numerous films and television series.
Black was one of the special guests of the night, singing his hit song that reached number 56 on Billboard’s Top 100 chart, and became a sensation online, where the video was shared over and over again. As posted to Twitter by The Game Awards, you can hear just how the crowd reacted to the song as Black took to the stage.
Black didn’t just perform “Peaches,” though, as he also united with Tenacious D’s Kyle Gass to perform new number “Video Games,” which the ceremony’s founder Geoff Keighly, found very appropriate for the night.
“They have this new song out, “Video Games,” which is just incredible and fun. As soon as we heard it, we were like, ‘Maybe things could work out for them to be at the Bowl? We’re thrilled to have them. Jack, especially, has been a massive fan and supporter of video games for decades and really loves them. Just having him in the house I think is going to add an awesome energy.”
The songs performed by the orchestra were all played with clips from the games and videos allowing the audience to truly immerse themselves in the experience. Other games, and shows based on games, that were featured include, Arcane, Diablo, Elden Ring, Final Fantasy, God of War, Hades, Hogwarts Legacy, League of Legends, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Starfield, Star Wars Jedi, and The Last of Us.
