We haven’t had too many decent Marvel movies since Multiverse of Madness, have we? Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was certainly the saving grace of Phase 5 thus far, but as we sing the swan song of the Guardians as we know them, all good things must come to an end. Outside of live-action, the animated Marvel projects are performing better than ever — Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, M.O.D.O.K., and What If…? are consistently outshining the MCU’s frequent flops.
What If…? coincidentally introduced us to Captain Carter, a variant of Steve Roger’s lifelong love who receives the super-soldier serum over him, thus becoming that universe’s female equivalent of Captain America. We see her in the live-action flesh for Multiverse of Madness, masterfully portrayed (as always) by British actress Hayley Atwell.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz, host of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Atwell opened up about the irony of Peggy’s abrupt demise in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. For those who don’t recall, Captain Carter ā like other members of the Illuminati ā went toe-to-toe with Scarlet Witch and lost. Although she landed a few good punches, Carter was ultimately sliced in half by her own shield.
“Watching her get so much slack, and I’m like ‘It wasn’t my choice!’ when she’s like ‘I could do this all day,’ and then followed by she’s immediately cut in half by a frisbee. And then the audience being like ‘She can’t do it all day, apparently you can’t, so… yeah, egg on your face.’ And I’m like ‘Oh, it doesn’t really serve Peggy very well.'”
The future doesn’t look all that bright for a possible Peggy return, but never say never. Right now, Atwell is preoccupied with her work on Mission: Impossible, recently starring alongside Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible ā Dead Reckoning Part One, which is currently showing in theaters.
