‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ box office update raises fears it could be ‘Indiana Jones 5’ all over again

Even Tom Cruise can't bring people to the cinemas anymore.

In a year of disastrous box office bombs and blockbuster cinema’s utter failure to rope people in, it seems that even Tom Cruise’s new film, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, might be doomed to fail.

Dead Reckoning continues Ethan Hawke’s story, though the movie might fail to imitate the theatrical run of its predecessor in 2017. In fact, based on a report by Deadline, Dead Reckoning‘s box office gross is following a similar pattern as Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which, with a budget of $400 million, was easily one of the biggest bombs in recent memory.

The movie racked up only $8.3 million on Thursday, a 47% decrease from Wednesday’s $15.5 million. But now that we’re officially entering another weekend, box office numbers are projected to rise. The only question now is the extent, because even though Dead Reckoning was tracked for a $90 million opening, estimates are now putting it at $70 million.

We can always count on word of mouth and other hype-increasing factors to give the movie a tiny boost, of course, and the early reception to Dead Recoking Part One does seem to indicate another hit for Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise.

The outlook isn’t great right now, but Dead Reckoning might still end up grossing more than its contemporary rivals could hope for in their wildest dreams.

But if the sequel indeed fails to generate enough interest in the weeks to come, then cinema will have to look toward the earth-shaking “Barbenheimer” duo to deliver it from stagnation.
