Kalani Faagata and Asuelu Pulaa are perhaps two of the most well-known cast members in 90 Day Fiancé history. Originally featured on season 6, the on-again-off-again couple have appeared in multiple spin-offs in the 90 Day universe, including Happily Ever After?, What Now?, and Pillow Talk. Now, the often-controversial couple have been cast in the series 90 Day Fiancé: Last Resort.
Prior to their appearance on the show, rumors had been swirling through social media that the pair have split, long before their appearance on the new spin-off, where couples travel to a destination resort as a last-ditch attempt to save their relationship. Given all this uncertainty, it’s time to examine the evidence surrounding Kalani and Asuleu’s relationship status, and where the pair stand today.
Kalani and Asuelu’s relationship timeline
In order to unpack Kalani and Asuelu’s complicated relationship, it is important to discuss their journey from the beginning, from their first appearance in the 90 Day universe. Kalani, who is half-Samoan herself, met Asuelu while visiting the country on vacation. Although initially celibate due to her Mormon beliefs, Kalani quickly fell pregnant after beginning a relationship with Aseulu, hastening their engagement and plans for Asuelu to move permanently to the U.S.
Due to visa complications, Asuelu was unable to attend the birth of their son Oliver in the U.S., and met him for the first time when Kalani traveled to Samoa when Oliver was two months old. By the time he was able to move to her home state of Utah, Oliver was five months old and they were soon expecting their second child. This was much to the disapproval of Kalani’s father, who was suspicious of Asuelu’s intentions over getting a green card from the outset, and wanted his daughter to marry a white man. Despite their frequent fights, the pair married in September 2018, and their second son was born in the following year.
The couple returned to television in the spin-off 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? seasons 5 and 6. Married life wasn’t always bliss for the couple – with Kalani’s parents moving in to support the family after seemingly non-stop strain. The pair frequently fought over Asuelu pulling his weight with both his part-time job and role in childcare, which he believed was mostly the woman’s responsibility. Things worsened when Asuelu’s family butted heads with Kalani over not sending money over from the U.S., with Asuelu refusing to take her side. After Asuelu got into a life-threatening car accident, the couple said they put their differences aside to focus on what was truly important.
This mindset, however, didn’t seem to last for long. On an episode of 90 Day Diaries in March 2022, the couple admitted they were fighting again. The same old issues seemed to arise – with Kalani discussing in the interview that she felt Aseulu still wasn’t pulling his weight. Kalani’s mother still lived with the family, and Kalani alleged that Asuelu left her with all the childcare responsibilities, even when he was also present in the home.
So, are Kalani and Asuelu still together?
Away from the cameras, Kalani and Aseulu’s relationship status has been much less clear. What they had been willing to reveal to the public on their social media channels is much hazier than during their time on TV. Fans noticed after their 90 Day Diaries episode that the couple were no longer following each other on Instagram, with Kalani claiming that Asuelu blocked her. However, this didn’t necessarily point towards a break-up for these two.
When Kalani moved to California in May 2022, he was still posting about living in Utah on his own socials. This seemed like a confirmation that they were living two separate lives, but Asuelu soon began appearing on her now California-based posts again, alongside their two sons.
Fans have speculated that Kalani and Asuelu were seeing other people, but neither party confirmed where they stood, or if the rumors regarding new relationships were true, until they starred on the spin-off series 90 Day: The Last Resort. In the series, Kalani and Asuelu, along with many other famous couples from across the 90 Day universe, attended a couples retreat designed to help the alumni work out the complexities of their relationships.
What happened with Kalani and Aseulu on 90 Day: The Last Resort?
Right off the bat, things were bad for Kalani and Aseulu on The Last Resort. In the first couples’ therapy session, Kalani admitted that she and her husband had been unfaithful to one another. After a case of oral thrush exposed that Aseulu had been with another woman, Aseulu presented Kalani with a “hall pass” to kiss another man. However, things weren’t so simple, as Kalani did more than kiss this mysterious man, and developed feelings for him, leaving Aseulu devastated.
As the therapy sessions continued, Kalani revealed that Aseulu had admitted to cheating on her over a dozen times, from the beginning of their relationship and throughout both her pregnancies and beyond. Aseulu vowed to become a faithful partner after a confrontation with Kalani’s sister during a family therapy session. However, after Kalani saw Aseulu delete messages from his phone, as well as finding out about a secret guys’ trip to a strip club, Kalani decided to get back at him by meeting up with “hall pass Guy” outside of the resort.
After realizing she no longer wants to make things work with Aseulu, Kalani asked Aseulu for a divorce, with Aseulu referring to their break-up as “the worst day of [his] life.” During the re-commitment ceremony, Kalani and Aseulu exchanged vows of friendship and a promise to peacefully co-parent.
However, since filming wrapped, Kalani has alleged on social media that Aseulu had been sexually abusive toward her during their relationship. While addressing receiving rape and death threats online in October 2023, the reality star alleged on Instagram that she and Aseulu had a second baby as a result of being “held down” by her then-husband against her will. So far, Aseulu has not publicly commented on his former wife’s allegations.
