Here’s what we know about Luigi Mangione, the suspected gunman in UHC CEO Brian Thompson’s murder

Luigi Mangione, 26, was arrested Monday in Altoona, PA, in connection to the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan last week. A McDonald’s restaurant employee recognized Mangione and called the police early Monday morning, according to multiple reports.

According to The New York Times, Mangione is from Maryland, has ties to San Francisco, and lived in Hawaii until recently. According to the New York Post, he graduated high school in 2016 from Gilman School in Baltimore, where he played soccer, and he had no known criminal record before his arrest.

Mangione’s profiles also say he has a M.S.E. and B.S.E. in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania. The suspect’s X and LinkedIn accounts list his hometown as Honolulu, HI. Mangione’s LinkedIn says he works as a Data Engineer at TrueCar, Inc., an online car-selling platform with offices in Santa Monica, CA and Austin, TX.

The evidence police recovered

Pennsylvania police say they found a gun, a silencer, and multiple fake IDs in Mangione’s possession Monday. Authorities say he used a false New Jersey ID to check into the Manhattan hostel where the suspect reportedly stayed before the attack. Clothing also matched the clothing in surveillance footage of the Thompson gunman.

A document was also reportedly found in Mangione’s possession, and while there seemed to be no continued threat to the public, “it does seem he has some ill will toward corporate America,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. CNN says the two-page-long document criticizes the healthcare industry and calls for violence.

The Post says Mangione “liked” Ted “Unabomber” Kaczynski’s quotes online, and in an online review of Kaczynski’s book, Industrial Society and Its Future, Mangione wrote, “It’s easy to quickly and thoughtless write this off as the manifesto of a lunatic, in order to avoid facing some of the uncomfortable problems it identifies. But it’s simply impossible to ignore how prescient many of his predictions about modern society turned out,” according to The New York Times.

Mangione’s review added, “[Kaczynski] was a violent individual — rightfully imprisoned — who maimed innocent people. While these actions tend to be characterized as those of a crazy luddite, however, they are more accurately seen as those of an extreme political revolutionary.”

Kaczynski who died in prison last year, mailed bombs to universities and other organizations killing three people. In his manifesto, Kaczynski said he did what he did to slow technological progress and protect the environment. The Post says that Mangione liked and followed several anti-capitalist and environmental protection influencers, similar to Kaczynski’s beliefs.

“All is scheduled be patient, bye for now”

Reports have also now emerged that Mangione scheduled a YouTube video to post after his arrest on a channel called The Truth. The video said, “If you see this, I’m already under arrest, and, “All is scheduled, be patient. Bye for now.”

These strange details are consistent with words found etched onto bullet casings at the scene of Thompson’s murder, “deny,” “defend,” and “depose.” New York authorities also recovered a backpack the gunman wore during the attack with Monopoly money inside it.

Mangione has been declared a “person of interest” in Thompson’s case but has not been formally charged in connection to Thompson’s murder. Reports say Mangione was taken into custody on weapon charges.
