‘His stance against racism rings hollow’: Prince Harry stays silent amid second South African charity scandal

All eyes are on Harry to take a stand.

Prince Harry has yet to address the latest scandal involving a South African charity linked to him. This comes amid mounting pressure from the public and media. According to multiple sources, the Duke of Sussex has remained tight-lipped as accusations of human rights violations emerge. It’s the second controversy to strike a charity associated with his humanitarian efforts this year.

The Harry-linked African Parks Network and the Odzala-Kokoua-Lossi Foundation (OKF) are targeted in the latest controversy. The group is accused of human rights abuses connected to the Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the Congo. The allegations involve violence by ecoguards against local communities, including serious allegations of physical and sexual abuse.

Killings, arbitrary arrests, and violence

A team of human rights specialists from Omnia Strategy and Doughty Street Chambers conducted the 16-month independent investigation into allegations made by Survival International and other advocacy groups. According to the investigation report released in May 2025, the team examined incidents reported since African Parks took over management of the park in 2010, focusing on allegations of unlawful killings, arbitrary arrests, and violence against the indigenous Baka community.

Although the investigation has concluded, the report refrained from disclosing its findings or any recommendations made to African Parks, citing confidentiality agreements. Omnia Strategy stated that their process was thorough and conducted with neutrality, rigor, and professionalism, adhering to international standards of human rights investigation.

The OKF allegations have sparked renewed debate about conservation practices, with Survival International accusing the African Parks Network of perpetuating “colonial conservation” that displaces indigenous communities.

The Sentebale scandal

This scandal comes months after another South African charity linked to Prince Harry became embroiled in a similar controversy. In early 2025, Sentebale, the charity co-founded by Prince Harry to support children affected by HIV in southern Africa, faced scrutiny over mismanagement allegations. Prince Harry stepped down from Sentebale earlier this year, citing a desire to focus on his family and other global initiatives.

Despite the growing controversy, Prince Harry has not publicly addressed the issue. Sources close to the Duke say he has no plans to comment. While some argue that his silence is a responsible stance while investigations unfold, others believe it undermines his credibility as a humanitarian advocate.

This is not the first time Prince Harry’s philanthropic connections have come under the spotlight. Critics argue that his association with charities implicated in human rights abuses contradicts his advocacy for social justice.

Supporters, however, point out that he dedicates significant time and resources to African conservation and humanitarian efforts. And for this reason, Harry cannot be responsible for every aspect of an operation that partners manage.

Harry’s silence speaks volumes

The OKF controversy highlights a complex issue for Prince Harry, who often advocates for mental health, humanitarianism, and environmental preservation. His involvement with African Parks dates back to 2017 when he became its president, a role that underscored his commitment to wildlife conservation on the continent. Yet, with the recent wave of criticism, some wonder whether he should publicly address the allegations to maintain his reputation.

Royal observers note that Harry’s silence could be part of a calculated decision to protect the privacy of those involved and to avoid interfering with ongoing investigations. Others, however, see it as a missed opportunity to show leadership during a crisis.

African Parks, while acknowledging the gravity of the accusations, has reiterated its commitment to human rights and promised to follow any recommendations from the independent investigation.

They have also pledged to commission a separate inquiry into unresolved incidents. Meanwhile, Prince Harry’s continued silence has left the public guessing about his stance on the matter.

For now, the world watches as the story unfolds, wondering whether Prince Harry will ultimately break his silence or continue to distance himself from the growing scandal. One thing is clear: the controversy has placed both his humanitarian legacy and his public image under intense scrutiny.
