‘It’s incredibly sad it has come to this’: Prince Harry loses his best friend to Prince William amid godparent drama

So many people are caught in the middle of the fued.

There are new reports about the ongoing drama between Prince Harry and Prince William, and it’s reportedly putting their mutual friend, Hugh Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster, in a difficult position. The Duke, who recently had a daughter named Cosima with his wife Olivia, is reportedly struggling with the decision of who to choose as Cosima’s godfather.

Grosvenor is reportedly torn between choosing Prince William or Prince Harry for the role. It seems like Prince William is the more likely choice because of his continuous presence in the Duke’s life. However, it’s not a simple decision. Grosvenor has a close relationship with both brothers, and he’s already a godfather to Prince George, William’s oldest son. This is worse as Express labels him as a “best friend” of the pair.

To make things even more complicated, he’s also a godfather to Prince Archie, Harry’s son. This existing connection to both families makes the decision even harder, and it could be a reason he’d want to make Harry the godfather for his daughter, too.

Prince William and Prince Harry may lose a friend soon

The news about this dilemma is causing a stir among the princes’ circle of friends. It really seems to show how wide the gap has become between Harry and William. Grosvenor is reportedly navigating a “minefield” just to choose between them. While there hasn’t been an official announcement about who the godparents will be, it shows how fractured the brothers’ relationship is.

This isn’t the first time the brothers’ relationship has impacted Grosvenor. Last year, William was an usher at Grosvenor’s wedding, while Harry was famously absent. It was widely speculated that Harry’s no-show was a direct result of the fallout with his older brother after his memoir was published. The Duke and his wife never publicly commented on why Harry wasn’t there, but a friend of the brothers did speak out about Harry and Meghan Markle’s absence.

The friend said, “It’s incredibly sad it has come to this. Hugh is one of very few close friends of William and Harry’s who has maintained strong bonds and a line of communication with both. He wishes they could put their heads together and patch things up, but realises it’s unlikely to happen before the wedding.”

The Grosvenor family has a long history with the British Royal Family. For instance, Hugh played an important role in King Charles III’s Coronation in 2023, carrying the Standards of the Quarterings of the Royal Arms and the Standard of the Principality.

Hugh’s late father, Gerald Grosvenor, was also a close friend of King Charles, and King Charles actually became one of Hugh’s godparents when he was born in 1990. Gerald’s widow, Natalia, is a godmother to Prince William, and Princess Diana was a godmother to Gerald’s second daughter, Lady Edwina Grosvenor. It just goes to show how intertwined these families are, which makes the current situation even more difficult.
