Governor Newsom steals Donald Trump’s only flex and gives MAGA yet another reason to cry

Knowing Trump, he is probably bummed that he couldn't do it first.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has been mocking Donald Trump’s penchant for using social media to amplify cultural debates, much to the outrage of several influential conservative figures. Now, Governor Newsom has decided to take his satire even further by taking credit for things that only tangentially involve him, such as the Cracker Barrel logo change fiasco.

Cracker Barrel recently changed its logo to a bland, and admittedly uninspired, version of its old design. Nearly everyone who felt compelled to comment on the situation suggested that the company should revert to its original logo. But conservative figures, including Donald Trump and his son, took matters further and claimed the change was made to appeal to “woke” sensibilities. The unfavorable press coverage led to a significant stock drop, prompting the company to return to its old logo.

Gavin Newsom saw this as the perfect opportunity to continue trolling the president with Trump-esque tweets and even took credit for Cracker Barrel’s logo change – just like the president of America has done in numerous cases. It didn’t take long before Trump supporters missed the point and began pushing back on the official page of the California governor’s press office, insisting that the credit for this very mundane issue belonged to Trump.

But Newsom simply responded to all the criticism on X by saying, “they still don’t get it.” Trump has constantly taken credit for everything good that happens to the economy while simultaneously blaming the Biden administration for unfavorable developments, such as lowered credit ratings. Sometimes he even takes credit for dubious claims, like ending six wars, despite his administration’s notable complicity in the increasingly criticized war in Gaza.

Trump has also gone as far as claiming that governors praise him behind closed doors — something both Newsom and Maryland Governor Wes Moore have gone to great lengths to deny. Newsom’s trolling is becoming more effective because he highlights Trump’s hypocrisy in ways that even his base cannot easily ignore. And when they do attempt to confront the California governor, it only further underscores how chaotic Trump has been and how much grace his supporters extend to him regardless of his actions.

The Trump camp has pointed to the Cracker Barrel situation as further proof that their “Go Woke, Go Broke” mantra is foolproof. But even that claim is dubious at best. There’s no real evidence that any group demanded Cracker Barrel change its logo, or that anyone was particularly happy about the change. Furthermore, Target recently cut DEI initiatives, only to see its revenue drop in consecutive quarters, forcing the company to fire its CEO and restrategize its approach to the market. That suggests there is still value in listening to consumers.

Cracker Barrel listened to its customers, not just Trump. And as long as Gov. Newsom keeps up the trolling, the president won’t be able to simply get away with these claims. As long as MAGA loyalists continue questioning how Newsom carries himself, they might just end up questioning Trump as well.
