Public perception on gender reveal parties has somewhat shifted in recent years. Many would prefer to see something simple over an elaborate reveal, but others prefer the theatrics. For one couple on TikTok, the mom-to-be was upstaged by her own mother who decided to take the gender reveal into her own hands.
Gianna shared a video of her and her husband popping the confetti cannons to reveal what the gender of their baby was going to be. After counting down, both release the cannons only to be confused by the fact that one was blue and the other was pink. So what happened? Was it some sort of mistake? Were they having twins?
Well. It turned out Gianna’s mother had given herself a balloon to pop. She had intentionally waited until the couple fired the confetti cannons and waited until all eyes were on her before popping the balloon to reveal the true gender.
The clip has gone viral on TikTok and has sparked fierce debate over whether the mother was selfish to make the gender reveal all about her or whether it was simply a fun way of making the whole thing a bit more interesting.
People on TikTok mostly agree it was a selfish move
It’s hard not to view the stunt pulled by Gianna’s mother as anything other than a desperate bid to grab attention when the focus should have been on the couple whose baby it actually was. “Next time don’t tell her [you’re] having a gender reveal party,” quipped one viewer. Another typed out what the mom was likely thinking, “How do I make someone’s gender reveal about me[?]” Others labeled Gianna’s mom a “narcissist” and “toxic.”
As for Gianna, she admits that she was initially “frustrated” with her mom for keeping her guessing. In an interview with PEOPLE, she claims that she didn’t like being kept waiting as she had been “anxious all day,” about the gender of the baby, and she had asked her mom for no surprises.
“When she revealed the gender her way, I immediately thought, ‘How typical of her.’ “She loves to be in the spotlight, maybe it’s just the Leo in her.”
However, Gianna and her husband don’t hold any ill-will towards her mother over the incident, “It was funny to hear how confused everyone was, and it added a little bit more suspense,” she reasons. However, she ultimately decided to post it online to get the “public’s side” on the matter as she and her mom still disagree on whether it was a good idea or not.
Well the people of TikTok made their opinions crystal clear and they certainly weren’t on the mom’s side with this one.
