‘Car dealer taught me this’: Woman shares hack to restore her interior and the shine is undeniable

Sure it's shiny now, but wait until summer turns that car into a grease slip-n-slide.

A viral TikTok video showing a woman using Vaseline to clean her car’s interior has started a big debate online. The video, posted by a creator known as Country Wife, has gotten 5.9 million views. But most people who watched it are warning others not to try this at home.

In the Tiktok video, Country Wife shows how she uses Vaseline to clean her car. She puts some Vaseline on a cloth and rubs it on her car door. At first, the results look pretty good. The inside of her car starts to shine. She says someone who works at a car dealership taught her this trick, which made it seem like a good idea.

“Car dealer taught me this,” she wrote on the video. After she spread the Vaseline around the door, her car’s interior did look shiny and new. But people who know about cars are saying this is actually a really bad idea.

This hack could actually wreck your car

People who love cars and know how to take care of them have been speaking up about why using Vaseline is dangerous. On car forums like Toyota Nation, users said that Vaseline can cause a lot of problems. They warned that the product is very slippery and might not work well with the plastic parts inside cars. Over time, it could even break down or eat away at these plastic materials.

Petro Naft, a company that makes petroleum products, says that Vaseline picks up dust, dirt, and grime really easily. This means that if there’s any dirt already in your car, the Vaseline will spread it around when you wipe. This can cause scratches and push dirt even deeper into your car’s surfaces. The company also says that Vaseline can actually damage and warp plastic parts over time.

The slippery coating that Vaseline leaves behind creates other problems too. It can get on your clothes when you sit in the car. Even worse, if you use it on the steering wheel, it makes the wheel hard to hold onto while driving. Some people online have shared stories about Vaseline damaging plastic items. One person said it left black marks on a Rubik’s cube, showing that the plastic was falling apart. Like many TikTok hacks that can be risky, this one seems to cause more problems than it solves.

People who left comments on Country Wife’s video had the same worries. One person said that Vaseline doesn’t work well with plastics that sit in the sun. Another person said the shine would quickly turn into a greasy mess covered in dust. Some viewers suggested better products to use instead.

One person recommended things like Meguiars Interior Detailer or 303 Interior, saying these work much better and won’t damage the car over time. As experts have pointed out about other dangerous TikTok trends, just because something becomes popular online doesn’t mean it’s safe to try.
