Israeli soldiers caught on video executing surrendered Palestinians, minister praises them, says they ‘acted exactly as expected’

Inarguably a war crime.

It’s one thing to hear about Israel‘s crimes, it’s quite another to see them with your own eyes. The IDF has carved a bloody path across Gaza City and continues to brutalize those living in the occupied West Bank. Reports of Israel’s crimes are in the newspapers each day, but seeing them live on video is rarer.

Recommended Videos

Press coverage of atrocities is limited to due to Israel preventing journalists from witnessing it, destroying telecommunications in an attempt to prevent Palestinians broadcasting their genocide, and, well, just straight-up murdering journalists.

All of which means this new video showing two unarmed Palestinian men being executed in cold blood by Israeli troops in the city of Jenin in the West Bank is horrifying stuff. The video, shot at a distance by an anonymous cameraperson, shows construction equipment being used by a squad of Israelis to tear down a warehouse door.

Two men emerge from inside, lifting their shirts to show that they’re not armed and present no threat. They lift their hands into the air in surrender, then are apparently ordered to crawl back inside the building. As soon as they’re inside, one of the soldiers coldly and calmly executes the pair, then they resume demolishing the building (presumably to cover up the murders).

Israel claims the two men were “affiliated with a terror network”. What that actually means is anyone’s guess, though it’s telling that they can’t even claim they were members of a terror network. And, even if they were, that’s no justification for a street execution.

War criminals

The Palestinian Authority has deemed this a “war crime” and the murders “brutal” field executions. And, frankly, having watched the video, it’s difficult to argue with that verdict. The International Criminal Court includes “killing or wounding a combatant who, having laid down their arms or having no longer means of defence, has surrendered at discretion” as a war crime under Article 8(2)(c)(iv) of the Rome Statute.

But, in an arguably refreshing twist, Israel isn’t even denying this particular war crime. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir took to X to say:

“I fully support the border guard members and Israeli army soldiers who shot at wanted terrorists who emerged from a building in Jenin. The forces acted exactly as expected of them — terrorists must die!”

I guess he’s right. These Israeli soldiers really are acting “exactly as expected”. At this point, who’s really surprised that Israel is openly committing literal war crimes as the world watches, sending armed psychopaths to terrorize civilians, and gleefully delivering death in the service of preserving their apartheid ethnostate?
