A mystery that began with a newborn believed to have been abandoned on a Detroit porch ended with a mother’s vow to stand by her daughter. Kira Peoples, mother of 16-year-old Peyton Peoples, says she is committed to helping raise her new grandson.
“The baby is always a blessing, Kira told Fox 2 Detroit. “It was just that my baby went through this by herself. We’re going to figure it out,” Kira added of her daughter and grandson, Paxton. “I’m going to keep going to work. She’s going back to school. I’m going to work midnights, and she’s going to go to school during the day, and we’ll switch off.”
Kira also stood for her daughter on social media, writing in part, “I’mma say this and then I’mma leave it alone because it is what it is y’all gonna believe what y’all wanna believe y’all gonna spread lies half truth whatever! I stand with my daughter, right wrong indifferent!”
Reports of an abandoned child
The incident began on Thanksgiving night, when a 911 caller reported that a newborn had been found on the front porch of a home on Detroit’s west side. Authorities arrived to find a baby boy, alive and in stable condition, outside the house.
At first, Peyton told her mother that she had heard a noise at the door and opened it to find an infant lying outside. Kira, stunned and frightened, immediately contacted authorities. Early on, the police treated the case as a possible abandonment, but within hours, the truth surfaced.
Peyton admitted everything
Once at the hospital, Peyton told police she didn’t know she was pregnant, and went into unexpected labor alone in the middle of the night. After her water broke, she said she went into the bathroom and gave birth. After delivery, she cleaned the infant, looked up on TikTok how to cut my umbilical cord, and then wiped him off again.”
She later admitted she lied because she feared placing more burden on her mother, who has worked to support the family since the death of Peyton’s father earlier this year.
“It’s hard. It was already hard for her to raise us, and that just added another burden on her back, and I didn’t want to do that,” Peyton told Fox 2 Detroit.
To help the household adjust to the sudden addition, Kira started a GoFundMe page titled “Standing with Peyton and Paxton in Their New Chapter.” The fundraiser has already drawn widespread community support.
Kira wrote on the page, “We are now both single moms trying to navigate a very unexpected and emotional time but we are struggling with the sudden financial and personal challenges that come with this situation.”
