Ted Cruz tried to warn us all about Donald Trump attacking Denmark in 2016, but we didn’t listen

So the last time Ted Cruz was right was a decade ago.

In 2016, Ted Cruz said something that sounded absurd enough to be dismissed as campaign hyperbole. A decade later, it sounds uncomfortably specific.

During the Republican primary, Cruz warned voters about Donald Trump’s temperament and impulse control. In one now-resurfaced clip, Cruz argued back then that Trump’s recklessness could drag the US into unnecessary international crises.

I don’t know anyone who would be comfortable with someone who behaves this way having his finger on the button. I mean, we’re liable to wake up one morning, and Donald, if he were president, would have nuked Denmark. That’s not the temperament of a leader to keep this country safe.

As an example, Cruz offered a hypothetical that Trump might even “nuke” Denmark. And Cruz isn’t joking or smiling while saying that. He’s making a serious case about Trump’s volatility and lack of restraint. At the time, it sounded ridiculous. Denmark is a NATO ally and a stable democracy. It’s the kind of country American presidents don’t threaten.

Yet, here we are. What makes the clip striking now is the country Cruz named. It’s unbelievable how closely it mirrors Trump’s current posture toward Greenland and Denmark’s sovereignty. The president has spent the past several months openly questioning Denmark’s right to control Greenland. He has repeatedly suggested that Russia or China will “take it” if the U.S. does not.

Ted Cruz turned out to be prophetic as Trump begins hostilities against Denmark and Greenland

Denmark, once a laugh line in a primary debate, has now been placed squarely in Trump’s rhetoric. Cruz’s warning no longer sounds exaggerated. It sounds predictive. He warned that Trump’s impulsive behavior could have catastrophic consequences on the world stage. And it’s slowly coming true. As one user on X wrote, “Who knew Ted could predict the future?”

But the same Ted Cruz who warned Americans about Trump’s instability is now one of Trump’s most reliable supporters. This is the same man whose wife Trump insulted. Trump even carelessly accused Cruz’s father of being involved in JFK’s assassination.

Yet, Cruz swallowed all of it, smiled, and fell in line with Trump. The man who once warned that Trump was too dangerous to be trusted with nuclear weapons now amplifies his agenda. But social media didn’t miss this hypocrisy. One user bluntly wrote,

“That must have been a Ted Cruz Doppelganger back in 2016 cause it seems like Teddy is currently all in as he enjoys the Fruits of Mar-a-Lago.”

So, Cruz tried to warn us, but then chose comfort over conviction. And now, the rest of us are left watching his prophecy inch closer to reality.
