Bill Maher, the host of Real Time, predicted that Republicans are going to get the “dog**** kicked out” of them in the upcoming midterms, and he thinks the sole reason for this political disaster is the current state of immigration enforcement.
Maher was absolutely heated, telling his panelists that the current approach to immigration control “is not what people voted for.” He backed up his claim by showing images of people being handled roughly by federal agents, including one shocking picture of a woman who appeared to be pepper-sprayed directly in the face while lying on the road, according to Fox.
This fury isn’t just limited to late-night TV. Minneapolis has been reeling from a recent immigration enforcement surge, and the situation there has become incredibly tense, leading to massive protests even in sub-zero temperatures. Maher took particular aim at the tragic fatal shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, who was killed by an ICE agent after allegedly driving toward the officer. Maher characterized the incident harshly, insisting, “That woman, that was an execution in the street.” He added, “I’m sorry, but it was.”
Murdering citizens isn’t what we want from our government
The outrage has only intensified with subsequent events. Just recently, federal agents shot and killed another man in Minneapolis, a 37-year-old US citizen who was reportedly a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry. Law enforcement officials stated that the man had approached Border Patrol officers with a handgun and violently resisted, leading an agent to fire “defensive shots.” However, video footage circulating shows agents wrestling the man to the ground before the shooting occurred.
After the last murder by ICE, the city immediately erupted in violent clashes following the incident. Protesters rolled dumpsters into the street, chanting “shame!” and “f— ICE!” before federal agents fired tear gas into the crowd. One protester recounted that the agents started firing tear gas after someone threw a snowball at an agent.
Local leaders are completely fed up with the tactics used by these unidentified federal agents. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey slammed the actions, saying, “The mass militarized force, unidentified agents, that is what weakens our country.” He called directly on President Trump to remove the federal forces right away, urging the president to “act like a leader” and end the operation to restore peace and safety. Governor Tim Walz was equally blunt, stating he had spoken to the White House following the “horrific shooting” and demanding, “The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.”
Despite his strong condemnation of the Republican enforcement tactics, Maher did concede that former President Barack Obama had been a “badass” when it came to deportation rates during his own administration. However, Maher quickly dismissed any idea of him crossing the aisle now, especially after the White House suggested the recent shootings were justified.
He told his audience that Republicans aren’t “intellectually honest,” concluding, “stop asking me if I have the slightest interest of joining your side. I never did, and you have no integrity.”
