Senate Democrats are absolutely furious over the actions of federal immigration agents and are threatening to shut down the government if they don’t get serious reforms to the Department of Homeland Security. This intense political standoff is being led by Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who is making it crystal clear that he will vote against any measure that funds DHS without imposing strict constraints on federal officers.
This massive confrontation is a result of the fatal shooting Alex Pretti, an event that has sparked widespread condemnation on Capitol Hill. The Hill reported that Sen. Murphy didn’t hold back when describing the situation, telling a television host that Democrats simply “can’t vote to fund this lawless Department of Homeland Security.”
The deadline to avoid a partial government shutdown is coming up this Friday, and many Democratic senators are vowing to oppose any funding bill that doesn’t include major changes. DHS oversees both Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP). President Trump’s administration has been utilizing both departments across the country for sweeping crackdowns on migrants, a move that many Democrats consider excessive.
I don’t think they are wrong to be worried that if funding passes, there will be no changes
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of New York confirmed this unified opposition. He stated that his caucus will not provide the necessary votes to pass the six-bill appropriations package if that DHS funding measure is still a part of it. This partisan divide was already visible in the House of Representatives, which narrowly, 220 to 207.
The Senate’s stand is a tough spot for Congress because that appropriations package funds several other crucial agencies housed under DHS, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Transportation Security Agency.
Murphy believes the issue goes beyond one isolated incident. He argues that the deployment of these federal agents amounts to a “nationwide campaign of lawlessness.” He emphasized that he isn’t aiming to “fix every single problem.” He just requires “constraints” on federal immigration officers, like the inclusion of body cameras during operations to create an objective record of what happens. It’s a fair ask when to see how ICE agents treat anyone who opposes them.
Murphy summed up the gravity of the situation in a powerful statement. “I swore an oath to the Constitution,” the Connecticut Democrat said. “So did every single United States Senator. We cannot fund a Department of Homeland Security that is murdering American citizens.” It isn’t just the Democrats looking for accountability, most Americans don’t believe that the ICE agents are justified in their actions.
