Matthew Broderick killed two women – including a mother of 3. His punishment? A fine lower than a parking penalty

For the most part, Matthew Broderick is a beloved actor in Hollywood. His roles in classic movies such as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and War Games saw him shoot to fame in the eighties. However, his career was almost derailed by an accident at the height of his stardom, the effects of which the actor no doubt still feels to this day.

Matthew Broderick was a staple of many people’s childhoods, in August of 1987, the young star had been travelling around Northern Ireland with his then-girlfriend and fellow Hollywood star, Jennifer Grey. Their scenic holiday quickly became a nightmare after Broderick swerved into oncoming traffic without explanation. Their vehicle collided with another on the road resulting in a nasty crash.

While Broderick and Grey survived the crash, the inhabitants of the other car were not so lucky. Anna Gallagher, 28, and her mother, Margaret Doherty, 63, were the two unfortunate souls in the car Broderick collided with. They lost their lives that day as a result of the collision while Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey survived. 

Grey told Entertainment Tonight that she initially believed Broderick had also passed away; she emerged from the car covered in his blood, although she herself was relatively uninjured. As for Broderick, he told the New York Post in 2002, “What I first remember is waking up in the hospital, with a very strange feeling going on in my leg.”

Suspicion falls on Matthew Broderick

Two people had died and people were expecting answers, but Broderick claimed (and still does to this day) that he couldn’t remember what had happened. He had suffered a concussion, broken ribs, a broken leg, and a collapsed lung and spent the next four weeks in hospital.

A theory floated around that Broderick may have gotten confused due to people driving on the opposite side of the road in Ireland compared to the U.S. (they drive on the left side), this momentary misjudgement may have been what led to him being in the oncoming traffic lane. However, Broderick’s apparent amnesia left authorities with no real way of knowing how at fault he was. Jennifer Grey has continued to claim that it was an accident and that Broderick “was a great driver.”

The actor was slapped with a $175 fine and charged with careless driving, something which the family of Doherty and Gallagher call a “travesty of justice.” Martin Doherty, the son of Margaret and brother of Anna suggested that Broderick got off lightly because of his filmstar status, “He got the same punishment he would have got if he’d run over cattle,” Doherty told the Belfast Telegraph. While Broderick wrote the family a note expressing his remorse after the accident there has been no known communication between the actor and the family since.

Doherty publicly forgave Broderick in 2002, stating that he didn’t kill Anna and Margaret deliberately. It was also reported that Broderick was set to meet with the Doherty family in order to give them closure. However, there has been no evidence that the meeting ever happened. Broderick’s career has slowed in recent years but he continues to make appearances in TV shows and movies.
