Donald Trump spent his Saturday evening making off-color jokes and bizarre threats at the exclusive Alfalfa Club dinner, adding a jarring end to a week already defined by aggressive governmental actions.
While demonstrators gathered nationwide to rebuke the administration’s aggressive immigration operations, the president suited up to attend a ritzy Washington tradition. Then, he joked about invading Greenland and bombing Iran in front of the bipartisan audience.
The annual Alfalfa Club dinner is a longtime institution for Washington’s elite, bringing together CEOs, politicians, and various luminaries. The club itself has a long history, starting back in 1913. For President Trump, the room was packed with people he wasn’t exactly friendly with, including JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and the outgoing Federal Reserve chairman, Jerome H. Powell, whose future Trump is actively investigating.
According to the Washington Post, President Trump didn’t shy away from the tension, noting, according to an attendee, “So many people in the room I hate. Most of you I like.” He added, “Who in the hell thought this was going to happen?” The appearance was decidedly Trumpian, marked by grievances over perceived slights and barbs aimed at political adversaries.
His barbs were clearly going to be dead on arrival
The president’s punchlines often fell flat, leaving the room silent. He suggested he might have to cut his speech short because he needed to watch the invasion of Greenland, then quickly conceded it was a joke. He pivoted, saying, “We’re not going to invade Greenland. We’re going to buy it.” He continued the bizarre theme, stating, “It’s never been my intention to make Greenland the 51st state. I want to make Canada the 51st state. Greenland will be the 52nd state. Venezuela can be 53rd.”
He also took shots at his own Federal Reserve nominee, Kevin Warsh, stating, “If he doesn’t lower interest rates, I’m suing his a— off,” the president said, immediately adding, “I’m kidding.” He paused, then concluded, “Eh …” When later asked by reporters about the comment, he simply called the whole evening “a roast” and “a comedy night,” though he admitted he truly hopes Warsh lowers interest rates.
The president also made several off-color comments about other attendees. Notably, he made a horrible ‘Native American’ themed joke about Senator Elizabeth Warren before he targeted Chief Justice John Roberts. Since he needs Robert’s support in the future, he stated, “I’m going to kiss his a— for a long time.”
This single night perfectly encapsulated Trumps lack of self-awareness. He engaged in his usual attempts to humiliate someone by making petty jabs and insults. He found the time to complain about the lack of acknowledgement, and then he took his chance to boast, mainly about Melania Trump’s documentary and the ballroom at the White House.
