On board Air Force One, Donald Trump was speaking to the press about Melania Trump, and the president made the bold claim that she will be remembered as one of the greatest First Ladies of all time. Trump claims her record will speak for itself.
The Melania record he speaks about happens to be the documentary. Trump said, “I’m proud of the fact that her movie is so successful. It’s a tremendous hit,” Trump continued. “She does a good job. She does very consequential work. I think you’re going to see in the end that she’s going to go down as one of the truly great first ladies.”
Whether a good documentary is what makes a public office successful is something you can debate with the administration, but calling Melania’s documentary successful is just factually wrong. The poor box office reception of the documentary was only rivaled by its poor critical reception of about 11% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Through a dubious funding process, AmazonMGM provided a $40M budget for a Melania documentary. The movie had a much hyped-about marketing push and a premiere at the newly renamed Trump Kennedy Center, where multiple conservative influencers and politicians attended. Still, the documentary was only able to make $2.9M on its opening day. The word of mouth didn’t do much for the documentary either, and it’s currently made $15M — far less than the production budget. Some reports suggest that Amazon was even willing to pay people to go into theaters and fill seats.
As for what the film was trying to achieve artistically, one of the filmmakers involved couldn’t even break it down cohesively in an interview with The New Yorker. He simply said, “The music is splendid, and it was shot in a very interesting way.” And when the interviewer compared the documentary with the infamous Nazi documentary Triumph of the Will, in order to ask if people should instead focus on good filmmaking even when watching unabashed propaganda, cinematographer Dante Spinotti said, “Yes, probably so.”
But even Spinotti eventually admitted that perhaps the documentary would have been more interesting were it about her actual activities as first lady. To Trump’s credit, he actually tried to shed a little light on Melania’s activities in her office. In the same interview, Trump added, “When you see what she’s doing with Russia, Ukraine…She works very hard.”

According to Newsweek, the White House has been championing Melania’s role in the unification of children in Russia and Ukraine during the war. In Oct. 2025, the first lady declared that she had reunified eight Ukrainian children with relatives who had been separated from their parents because of the war. The White House shared that this was possible due to back-channel, high-stakes discussions with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
The Kremlin-backed Russian state media has, however, remained hostile toward Melania and called her a “danger to Russia.” In an op-ed in Vzglyad that is widely read in the country, a reporter wrote, “it would be better for him [Trump] to buy her shoes than to sell Patriots (missiles) to Kyiv.”
