A high schooler from Georgia has been arrested and charged with the killing of teacher Jason Hughes in a prank that went horrifically wrong. Jayden Wallace had arrived at Hughes’ house with the intention of throwing toilet paper over the property, but what happened next would change his life and the lives of the teacher’s friends and family forever.
Wallace, an 18-year-old student at North Hall County High, is now facing a number of charges due to his ill-fated prank including first-degree vehicular homicide as per the New York Post. Hughes, 40, tragically lost his life after slipping in the road outside of his home and subsequently being run over by Wallace.
Wallace and friends had planned to prank Hughes
The high schooler had arrived at Hughes house with friends, intending to enact the classic prank of TPing the teacher’s house. The students had been engaged in a “prank war” which involved throwing toilet paper over people’s houses, teachers’ homes were worth two points. The prank war was something of a tradition and Hughes was reportedly aware of the prank and was “excited” to catch the students in the act. Hours prior to the incident the school had called for an end to the tradition due to things being taken “too far.”
The teacher had been waiting outside his home, knowing it would be a target as he and his spouse were teachers at the school. However, when Wallace and his friends showed up, the prank went horribly wrong. After catching them in the act, Hughes gave chase but slipped in the road and fell under the wheels of Wallace’s pick-up truck as he attempted to drive away.
The five teens attempted to give first aid to Hughes but he would later die of his injuries at a local hospital.
The aftermath
Following Hughes’ tragic death charges were brought against the teens, something which his wife, Laura, is against. She called for the charges to be dropped claiming that it would be “counter to Jason’s lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children.”
Jayden Wallace expressed his deep regret over the tragic accident. In a statement the teen pledged to “live out the remainder of my life in a manner that honors the memory of Coach Hughes by exemplifying Christ. He will never be forgotten.”
Meanwhile, Jayden’s family praised Jason Hughes for taking “the time to invest in Jay and [pouring] his love into him, making a lasting impact.” They expressed the “deepest sorrow and sincerest apology to the Hughes family.” Wallace was booked the same day before being released on a $1,950 bond.
The Hall County District Attorney, Lee Darragh stated that he would look into dropping the charges. Meanwhile, a GoFundMe has been set up for Jason Hughes’ wife and two young sons, so far $450,000 has been raised.
