‘Let them eat cake’: Donald Trump’s granddaughter tries comedy at California’s priciest grocery store, but the internet’s reaction says it all

The apple clearly didn’t fall far from the tree.

Donald Trump is weighing his options after Iran declared that it has officially closed down the Strait of Hormuz in response to the president’s escalation, thereby almost certainly raising the already barely bearable cost of living. But for his granddaughter, Kai Trump, life could not be better as she posted a comedic video on YouTube showcasing just how unattainable shopping at Erewhon Grocery is for most people.

Normally, keeping public figures’ families out of political commentary is customary. However, when the president is on television every two days announcing the deaths of US service members before adding “there will likely be more,” and the administration hinting that Americans should brace for tougher financial times as a result — this seems like an exception.

Kai’s video was simple. She went into Erewhon and spent $21 on a smoothie, $14 on bottled water — you know, just a regular day out. She then joked that the trip could “bankrupt” her. Highly unlikely, considering recent reports showing just how beneficial the presidency has been to the Trump family. After she was done mingling with the people, Kai got back into her motorcade and drove off.

If she wants to be a YouTuber, that’s her right. After all, her grandfather’s public life peaked when he too dabbled in the reality television of its day. What most people online didn’t like, however, was the backdrop of everything else that is going on. CNN posted about the story on their official Instagram, and users were livid.

Multiple users posted GIFs of Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette, while others stayed on theme by simply commenting “let them eat cake.” Some users finished off their critique with #DraftKai. But by far the most stinging indictment was the comment that read: “I mean, not surprising, but it is interesting that she chose to joke about bankruptcy — a tactic this family has admitted to using to avoid paying back what they owe.” The apple clearly didn’t fall far from the tree.

Most people on the internet didn’t have an issue with a young YouTuber having fun in her little cocoon of cultural specificities that older generations wouldn’t understand. That, after all, is what people should do with their youth. The problem seems to stem from the fact that most people feel like they can’t do that. Or rather, people from that same generation in their own families can’t do that. They’re struggling with bills and going off to foreign lands to fight in a war that the White House admits it started because of how Trump felt that morning.

That lack of forethought is the reason the entire world is still dealing with this mess. Trump’s war so far has only resulted in replacing Ayatollah Khamenei with his own son. So far that war has cost $20 billion — money like that could have provided healthcare for 5 million Americans, housing for 250,000 Americans, or even college tuition for 2 million Americans. One could only dream of such fantasies.

The reality is that while people send off their sons and daughters to war, Kai Trump wants you to know her milkshake cost $21. People are upset because they know, deep down, that they deserve better than they’re getting. And that’s why they keep posting that hashtag: #DraftKai. Because if their families have to go to Trump’s war, then his own family should too.
