Representative Nancy Mace announced Thursday that what started as a mission to rescue a single South Carolina family from the Middle East escalated into a “full scale evacuation” of hundreds of Americans from the region. Mace, who is currently seeking the GOP nomination for governor in her home state, shared on X early Thursday morning that she had just returned from Israel the previous night on a flight filled with rescued Americans.
She emphasized that when people are stranded in a war zone, facing missiles and rockets, the only acceptable response is to get them out. Mace recounted how she discovered that thousands of individuals remained trapped in the Middle East even after the family she initially aimed to assist had safely returned to the U.S.
According to The Hill, Mace worked closely with the U.S. State Department to secure transportation for Grey Bull Rescue, a Florida-based, veteran-led nonprofit. This incredible organization specializes in evacuating American citizens and allies from dangerous areas, including war zones and natural disaster sites. Mace explained that Grey Bull Rescue had the personnel on the ground but lacked the aircraft needed for the larger operation.
I applaud her support, but traveling there was unneeded
She shared that during its 808th rescue mission, Grey Bull Rescue successfully extricated 155 Americans, a group that included several infants. Bryan Stern, the founder and chair of Grey Bull Rescue, confirmed that the organization has rescued a total of 591 Americans from the Middle East since joint U.S.-Israeli operations began on February 28.
Stern made it clear that his organization operates as an “absolutely apolitical” entity. Nevertheless, he extended his gratitude to Mace, the State Department, and the U.S. embassies in Amman, Jordan, and Jerusalem for their essential support.
He praised the consular staff at both embassies, too. Stern noted that they worked tirelessly to assist Americans to the best of their ability, even within the constraints of policy limitations. Officials are increasingly concerned about potential retaliatory attacks outside Iran. They are urging Americans to closely follow all security guidance and to depart the region if they are able to do so.
Many people on X have been sceptical about the need for Mace to travel to Israel. As one person pointed out, her traveling on the plane is one less seat for someone who needs it. When you see the barrage of videos and photos put up by Mace, it becomes so obvious that while she may have started out with good intentions, this is now nothing but a PR stunt on the back of needed publicity for Grey Bull Rescue.
Immediately after Khamenei’s death, she tried to use his ethnicity and religion to make fun of two democrats. Not long before that, staffers expressed worry about her erratic behavior. I am afraid that this rather blatant attempt at a photo op isn’t going to do her any favors, at least not with the public.
