‘It’s not possible for us’: Donald Trump has $200,000,000,000 for war, but says he can’t spare a dime for Medicare or daycare

Sorry folks, there's no money left.

Ever wonder why American healthcare is such a nightmare? Almost all developed countries have some form of nationalized healthcare. For example, in the United Kingdom, if you break your leg, you’ll get an ambulance ride to a hospital, where you’ll be seen by a doctor, get X-rays, be fitted for a cast, and be given crutches or a wheelchair while you recover.

You’re not handed a bill at the end, there’s no negotiating with an insurance provider over coverage, there’s no stress over the cost of the ambulance ride, and no medical debt following you around for years.

But the United States of America, supposedly the greatest country in the world, cannot have this. Because it’s communism. Or something. Well, definitely un-American.

Donald Trump yesterday underlined his position that the federal government should have nothing whatsoever to do with healthcare. In fact, it needs to be focused on the exact opposite of healthcare: killing people. Speaking yesterday, Trump shrugged and said there’s simply no money left, it’s all been earmarked for war.

“It’s not possible for us to take care of daycare. Medicaid, Medicare. All these individual… things. They can do it on a state basis. You can’t do it on a federal… We have to take care of one thing: military protection.”

It is, in fact, very possible for the federal government to take care of Medicaid and Medicare. They just don’t want to. Shrugging and saying they don’t have the money for it is also ridiculous: in just 30 days, the Trump administration has burned $21 billion in its pointless war with Iran, whose only consequence has been making regular Americans poorer through skyrocketing gas prices.

Now they’re asking for a further $200 billion, which will also promptly go up in smoke as the world becomes a more chaotic, more dangerous, more expensive, and generally worse place to be alive in.

And Donald Trump just grows richer

You might quibble that perhaps the government really shouldn’t be subsidizing daycare. But give it a moment’s thought, and realize that if parents can rely on free daycare, they can then go and work without having to worry about their kids. The economy grows, consumer spending rises, and the money spent on daycare is more than made back in increased GDP.

Trump and his ilk don’t care about that stuff. They’ve got a fantastic scheme going on with the military industrial complex and health insurance that allows them to transfer your tax dollars directly into their bank accounts. All this machine needs to keep running are perpetual wars and your ill-health, and they can safely bank on both of those things.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking the current state of America is an unfortunate accident and that things have to be the way they are. The system that has made Donald Trump personally richer by $3.4 billion over his two presidencies was designed to do that. The sickest twist of all is that many of the people Trump is stealing from hoot and holler in pride as he gets richer, and they get poorer, and die.
